Lorna Doone: A Romance of Exmoor is a historical novel by R. D. Blackmore. Set in 17th-century England during the late Stuart period, the novel blends romance, adventure, and historical drama, making it one of the most beloved works of Victorian fiction. It is widely celebrated for its vivid descriptions of the rugged Exmoor landscape and its compelling blend of history and legend.

The story is narrated by John Ridd, a humble and courageous farmer living in the rural Exmoor region of Devon and Somerset. As a boy, John's father is murdered by the notorious Doone clan, a family of outlaws who terrorize the countryside. Despite this, John grows into a strong and principled young man.

During one of his adventures in the Doone Valley, John meets Lorna Doone, the beautiful and mysterious granddaughter of Sir Ensor Doone, the clan's patriarch. Lorna has been raised among the Doones but is unhappy with their violent ways. John and Lorna fall in love, but their romance is fraught with challenges, including family feuds, betrayal, and the violent ambitions of Carver Doone, a vengeful member of the clan who desires Lorna for himself.

The novel builds toward dramatic confrontations, including battles with the Doones and John's efforts to win Lorna's freedom. Historical events, such as the Monmouth Rebellion and the Bloody Assizes, are interwoven into the narrative, adding depth and realism. In the end, love and justice triumph, but not without trials and tragedy along the way.

Lorna Doone was a major commercial success during Blackmore's lifetime and remains a classic of English literature. It has been adapted into numerous films, TV series, and radio plays. Blackmore's detailed and evocative prose inspired future writers, particularly those interested in historical and regional fiction.
