Fernando Martínez Laínez nació en Barcelona y es escritor de amplia trayectoria periodística y literaria, culminada recientemente con el V Premio Algaba de Investigación Histórica otorgado al libro Como lobos hambrientos, sobre los guerrilleros españoles en la Guerra de la Independencia. Durante casi veinte años trabajó en el Servicio Informativo internacional de la Agencia EFE. Residió como corresponsal y delegado en Gran Bretaña, Cuba, la Unión Soviética y Argentina. Ha sido reportero, enviado especial y guionista de programas de radio y televisión, y ha viajado por América, Oriente Medio, norte de África, Asia Central, China, Japón, el Cáucaso, Europa del Este y los países bálticos. Con Carne de Trueque (1977), fue uno de los iniciadores de la moderna novela negra española, y ha publicado varias obras de este género, además de biografías, ensayos, libros de viaje y juveniles y novelas históricas. Dos veces ganador del Premio Rodolfo Walsh a la mejor obra de no-ficción otorgado por la Semana Negra de Gijón y la Asociación Internacional de Escritores Policíacos (AIEP), cuenta también en su haber con el Premio Grandes Viajeros por el libro de viajes Tras los Pasos de Drácula. Entre sus últimas obras publicadas están Tercios de España - La infantería legendaria y El Gran Capitán (en coautoría con el general J. M. Sánchez de Toca), Una Pica en Flandes - La epopeya del Camino Español, Banderas Lejanas (en coautoría con Carlos Canales) y las novelas históricas El rey del Maestrazgo y Embajada a Samarkanda.
