Mela los describía así "Los fenicios eran una raza inteligente, que prosperó en la guerra y la paz. Destacaron en escritura y literatura, y en otras artes, en náutica y en gobernar un imperio".

Si diseccionamos la cita de Mela, nos damos cuenta de que los fenicios fueron grandes escritores, pero casi no dejaron documentos. Puede que fueran excelentes marineros y comandantes navales, pero no construyeron ningún imperio territorial. Fueron artistas estelares, pero su trabajo contiene pocos elementos originales. Es posible que hayan sido constructores inteligentes, pero sus monumentos se derrumbaron. Y los fenicios eran una sola civilización, pero estaban divididos en ciudades-estado.
