She tries to connect to the audience by allowing them to have some familiarity to the characters. There isn't one character in this book that someone doesn't either know or can't relate to. That's what makes this book a good read. When you can reach into your imagination and paint the story being read, that puts everything into perspective. One thing that Toni wants her readers to gain is a positive message despite the situation. She plans on publishing more of her work in the near future.
