Die Zahl und die Komplexität politischer Fragen haben - nicht zuletzt als Folge der Globalisierung und technischer Entwicklungen im Informations- und Kommunikationsbereich - in den letzten Jahrzehnten zugenommen. Wer die Politik und wer die öffentliche Meinung bestimmt ist immer schwerer zu beantworten, zumal sich neben den technischen Möglichkeiten2 auch die Messinstrumente von Macht, die Arbeitswut der Demoskopen und anderer Rechenkünstler und damit die Fülle von Informationen die dadurch produziert wird exponentiell gesteigert haben und einen - theoretisch - tagtäglich, rund um die Uhr, rund um den Globus überschwämmen. Die neuen Technologien der digitalisierten Welt waren "Einschläge die den Berufsalltag verändern" und hatten laut BRUNS neben anderen Gründen eine "Beschleunigung und das damit verbundene Anschwellen der Menge von Informationen und Nachrichten" zur Folge. Und diese Welt mit ihrer schier grenzenlosen Sozialstruktur und ihren zahllosen politischen Bühnen ist der Arbeitsplatz der politischen Journalisten. Mit diesem Thema soll sich die vorliegende Arbeit, welche im Rahmen des Hauptseminars "Politischer Journalismus" bei Dr. Richard Meng entstanden ist, auseinandersetzen. Es wird gezeigt, welchen Nutzen der Einsatz von Zahlenmaterial und die Verwendung empirischer Daten im politischen Journalismus bringt und welche Funktion Meinungsumfragen somit für die Gesellschaft und die Demokratie im besonderen haben. Hierbei sollen nachrichtenwerttheoretische Überlegungen im Vordergrund stehen, die sich im Zusammenhang mit statistischen Daten ergeben.
