Su carácter, que podríamos calificar de inestable, le llevó a padecer crisis nerviosas que derivaron en una salud frágil y, prematuramente anciano, murió de una apoplejía a los 58 años. Gustave Flaubert is considered the introducer of 19th-century French realism. His obsession with style and the search for the mot juste (the exact word) made his works, scandalous for the society of his time, achieve unanimous recognition from critics and fellow writers. Shy to the point of pathology and at times arrogant, Flaubert did not cultivate many friendships during his life. His unstable character led him to suffer nervous crises that resulted in fragile health, and, prematurely aged, he died of a stroke at 58. A contemporary of another great genius of French literature, Charles Baudelaire, Flaubert left us a dazzling body of work that begins with Madame Bovary (1857), continues with Salammbô (1862), Sentimental Education (1869), The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1874), Three Tales (1877), and concludes posthumously with Bouvard and Pécuchet (1881).
