The authors have prepared this multi-volume book in different races in this sub-continent in such a way that anybody can be remained in loop till the end. Classification of the peoples or races of this land can be attempted only when we are in possession of accurate knowledge concerning them, but not before. The kind of knowledge which is required may be grouped under anthropology and folklore — heads which include much of archaeology. The last should by no means suffer from neglect, but, in the strict sense of its meaning, it is more confined to the relatively modem remains of man's handiwork, while the reach of the other two into the past is, one may say, boundless. In these, therefore, we must seek in order to find what we would know of the races of the human family, of the growth of human thought, of the trace of human religions, the course of civilization. The term folklore embraces not merely folk-tales, their variants and their migrations, which alone would perhaps never lead up to origins, but is comprehensive of all that pertains to human thought and feeling in the past as expressed in existing customs, ceremonial usages, beliefs, not omitting evidences of these in the tangible remains of the past, for example, the old stone circles. Whatever the reason may be, such facts as are of use to build up the structure of an ethnological survey of India — let us confine ourselves to our own Madras Presidency and say Southern India — are at the present moment very, very few. It defines different races on scientific way to make this multi-volume sets an interesting one.

Edgar Thurston CIE was a superintendent at the Madras Government Museum who contributed to studies in the zoology, ethnology and botany of India and published works related to his work at the museum. Thurston was educated in medicine and lectured in anatomy at the Madras Medical College while also holding his position at the museum. His early works were on numismatics and geology and these were followed by researches in anthropology and ethnography. He succeeded Frederick S. Mullaly as the superintendent of ethnography for the Madras Presidency.
