Ironía para cuestionar la realidad en Mala y Modesta 32 La realidad se configura en dos niveles o estratos complementarios; el primero de ellos está orientado hacia una realidad aceptada comúnmente y que remite, en lo principal, a la condición físico-biológica y social del hombre; mientras que la otra, construida psicológicamente, la constituyen las creencias, valores, expectativas, ideologías, etc. En MALA Y MODESTA es notable este planteamiento, sobre todo por el matiz irónico que particulariza a esta obra. La ironía presente aquí la podemos estudiar desde estas dos posibilidades, pues se ironiza -ficcionalmente, por supuesto- la realidad material y social admitida usualmente, y dentro de ella a las instituciones que la integran; y, además, se cuestiona, a través de la ironía, la actitud (en cuanto a sus ideas, valores, etc.) asumida por los hombres, representados en "entes de papel" (personajes), en conflicto con la realidad anterior. Toda esta sistematización de la realidad tiene el fin de expresar el cuestionamiento de la realidad referencial extratextual, la que le da origen. La primera aparición del recurso irónico en la novela es el desdoblamiento de los personajes, que resalta una belleza inexistente y más bien contrastante con la realidad construida en la novela, según se puede apreciar más adelante, a medida que nos vamos introduciendo en el relato; y este hecho induce a pensar que es una obra caracterizada ampliamente por este recurso. Este desdoblamiento es un estilo narrativo del autor, resaltan estas características: " [...] la belleza natural del Cantón Las Joyas, El Río Grande y El Sauce, [...], en medio de una naturaleza rica en especies vegetales y animales" Sin embargo, lo primero que descubre Mala y Modesta del mismo lugar son las " cuevas tenía un extraño cuarto en forma de laboratorio para brujerías. ". A lo largo de la novela se repiten apreciaciones similares; por ejemplo, la primera vez que Mala dice algo de Víctor lo hace con la expresión miserable"
