Maltese (Maltese: Il-L-Istorja) The only official Semitic language of the European Union is Tal-L-Ingliż or simply Il-L-Istorja, which is known locally as Il-L-Istorja. It is the national language of Malta and has a diverse history. An introduction to it is provided below:
1. Origins and History:
- Maltese is derived from Late Medieval Arabic spoken by North African settlers, particularly from the Maghreb, who ruled the Maltese Islands between the 9th and 12th centuries. Over time, it incorporated elements from Sicilian, Italian, and later English due to the influence of the Normans, the Kingdom of Sicily, and British colonial rule.
- Maltese is the only official Semitic language of the EU, and it retains many Arabic linguistic features, but with heavy influences from Romance and English languages. Its evolution is unique, as it evolved from a variety of spoken Arabic into a written language over several centuries.
2. Linguistic Features:

  • Alphabet: Maltese uses the Latin alphabet with a few extra letters (ċ, ġ, ħ, ż) to represent unique sounds in the language.
  • Grammar: Maltese is a Semitic language, meaning it shares characteristics with Arabic, Hebrew, and Aramaic, such as the use of root-based word structures. However, it also has significant influences from Romance languages, especially in its vocabulary and sentence structure.
  • Phonetics: While it retains some Arabic sounds, many words are pronounced closer to Romance languages, which makes it more accessible to speakers of European languages.
3. Maltese Vocabulary: Maltese has a strong Arabic foundation, with many words tracing back to Arabic roots. However, it has incorporated a significant amount of Italian and Sicilian, and in more recent times, English. Examples of Maltese words:
  • Ħobż (bread) - from Arabic خبز (khubz)
  • Xandir (to broadcast) - from Italian trasmettere (to transmit)
  • Laptop (same as English)
4. Modern Usage:
  • Maltese is spoken by approximately 500,000 people, the majority of whom live in Malta.
  • Official language: It is one of the two official languages of Malta, alongside English. The government, courts, and education system all use Maltese, especially in daily life, with English commonly used for more formal contexts or international business.
  • Bilingualism: Most Maltese people are bilingual or trilingual, speaking Maltese, English, and often Italian or other languages.
5. Maltese and Arabic: Although Maltese descends from Arabic, it is not a dialect of Arabic. The language has undergone centuries of change and has developed its unique identity, with many parts of the vocabulary and structure that differ significantly from classical Arabic. Nevertheless, there are still many words that are directly traceable to Classical Arabic.
6. Writing and Literature: The earliest known written examples of Maltese date back to the 16th century. Today, Maltese is a fully developed literary language, with a rich tradition of literature, poetry, and more contemporary works being produced.
7. Maltese as an EU Language: In 2004, Maltese was officially recognized as one of the official languages of the European Union. This marked a significant step in the preservation and promotion of the language.
Maltese is a unique and fascinating language with a rich cultural and historical heritage. Its roots in Arabic, coupled with influences from Italian, English, and Sicilian, make it a hybrid language that reflects the island's complex history. Today, Maltese continues to thrive as the heart of Maltese identity, spoken by thousands of people every day.
