About The Book

The book offers modalities for controlling myopia progression in children . It covers the complete spectrum of myopia control from its origin, natural history, causes, stimulus for progression, and modalities for controlling myopia progression along with future developments.

The initial chapters cover the origin of myopia in humanity, its changing pattern over the ages and the reasons for the current spurt in the number of cases. The subsequent chapters cover all aspects of the epidemiology of myopia, its natural history in an individual and the posterior segment complications of high myopia. The book discusses various causes of myopia and stimuli for myopia progression. It enumerates the anatomy, physiology and optics of myopia and their role in myopia progression. Subsequent chapters elaborate on factors affecting myopia progression, such as the genetic constitution and phenotypic influence of light, color, and intensity along with the effect of accommodation and near work on myopia. It includes separate chapters on myopia control strategies and optical and pharmacological interventions. The book elaborately covers the principles of clinical practice of orthokeratology and low-dose atropine for intervention in childhood myopia. It also outlines the future of myopia control.

About The Author

Dr (Col) Shrikant Waikar graduated from Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, India. He has specialized in the field of Ophthalmology from AFMC Pune (MS), followed by a Diplomate of National Board (DNB) and fellowship from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai (FMRF). He is a Professor of Ophthalmology and has been a Senior Adviser to 16 Armed Forces Ophthalmology centers across India. He has served as an ophthalmologist and anterior segment microsurgeon in various Armed Forces hospitals. He is currently Chief Medical Officer and Professor, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Sitapur Eye Hospital, Sitapur, India. He is also a member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (MNAMS). He has been routinely practicing various myopia control measures. He specializes in the management of myopia in children and orthokeratology. He has several publications and delivered numerous presentations at various national and international conferences. Dr S Waikar has taken lectures on 'controlling myopia progression in children' in various forums.
