Maria Monk and the Nunnery of the Hotel Dieu is a book written by William Leete Stone in 1836. The book is an account of the author's visit to the convents of Montreal and his investigation into the allegations made by Maria Monk, a former nun, about the sexual abuse and corruption that she claimed was taking place within the walls of the Hotel Dieu nunnery. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a detailed account of Maria Monk's story, which she claimed was based on her own experiences as a nun in the Hotel Dieu convent. According to Monk, the nuns were forced to engage in sexual acts with priests and other men, and babies born as a result of these acts were either murdered or left to die. She also claimed that the nuns were subjected to physical and mental abuse and were not allowed to leave the convent. The second part of the book is Stone's investigation into Monk's claims. He interviews several people, including priests, nuns, and former residents of the Hotel Dieu, and concludes that Monk's story is largely untrue. He finds no evidence of sexual abuse or murder, and suggests that Monk may have been mentally unstable or motivated by a desire for fame and fortune. Despite Stone's findings, the book was widely read and had a significant impact on public opinion. It fueled anti-Catholic sentiment in the United States and Canada and contributed to the rise of the nativist movement, which sought to limit the influence of immigrants, particularly Catholics, in American society.
