Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (1208-1273) was a 13th-century Persian poet, a Sufi mystic and one of the greatest spiritual masters and poetical intellects. Rumi is a mysterious and provocative poet. The Mathnawi is a series of six books of poetry that together amount to around 25,000 verses. It is a spiritual writing that teaches Sufis how to reach their goal of being in true love with God. The English translation of the Mathnawi appearing in this book was prepared by one of the greatest Rumi scholars and translators in the English language, Reynold Alleyne Nicholson.
