Based on events in real life, Matador in Naked City is a novel of Las Vegas . While the world's middle incomes flock to Las Vegas for entertainment and fantasies that safely expire upon predetermined departure like Cinderella's carriage, conversely, the economic casualties find themselves without such escape, deposited in the perennial limbo of existential dilemmas. The stories of their daily lives illuminate the illusions just a short stroll beyond the glittering Strip lights. Originally propelled by dreams of potential, human souls now exist on the fringe of neighborly generosity. Outcasts and misfits defeat loneliness and alienation by the idealistic hope for acceptance and redemption - like shimmering dreams beyond the reality of the next catastrophic neighborhood tragedy. These vignettes of isolated characters seem to encapsulate the trajectory of 21st century America.

María-Teresa Guzmán was born in Mexico, received part of her education in Europe and has travelled widely. She is a linguist who has devoted her life to teaching in several countries including the People's Republic of China, writing and translating. The setting of two of her novels, Lluvia negra and Nights in Heaven, is the rain forest of Mexico. With her collection of short stories, Sunday's Flowers, she walks us through a Mexico City full of beauty, peace and well-being, which has long since disappeared. Her latest work, Matador in Naked City, is a novel of Las Vegas where she now resides.
