Geschichte der Mathematik ist an den Universitiiten der Bundesrepublik kein Priifungsgebiet. Der Dozent muB sich daher iiberlegen, 1) welchen Zeit- aufwand er interessierten Studenten zumuten kann, 2) wieviel Zeit er braucht, urn etwas mehr als einen oberfliichlichen Oberblick zu bieten. Ich habe eine sich iiber zwei Semester erstreckende zweistiindige Vorlesung als angemessen angesehen und mehrmals solche Vorlesungen gehalten. Das vorliegende Buch enthiilt den Stoff des ersten der beiden Semester. (1m zweiten Semester wird die Geschichte der Mathematik im Abendland behandelt. ) Ohne den beriihmten "Mut zur Liicke" geht es natiirlich nicht. Meine Ab- sicht war, moglichst nahe an die Originale heranzufiihren und dabei die Art des mathematischen Denkens der verschiedenen Volker zu verschiedenen Zei- ten sichtbar werden zu lassen. Wichtiger als die vollstiindige Aufziihlung aller mathematischen Leistungen war mir die vollstiindige Durchfiihrung der einzel- nen Beispiele. Dabei habe ich mich bemiiht, den Gedankengang liickenlos dar- zustellen, erwarte aber, daB der Leser einfache Schliisse und besonders einfa- che Rechnungen selbst durchfiihrt. Ein Werk wie das vorliegende erhebt keinen Anspruch auf Originalitiit. 1m Laufe vieler Jahre habe ich mit vielen Kollegen mathematische Fragen bespro- chen und viel dabei gelernt. Das meiste und wichtigste verdanke ich der lang- jiihrigen Zusammenarbeit mit Kurt Vogel, sehr viel auch der gemeinsamen Ar- beit mit den Mitgliedern des Instituts fUr Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften an der Universitiit Miinchen, Kurt Elfering, Menso Folkerts (der auch die Kor- rekturen mitgelesen hat), Brigitte Hoppe, Winfried Petri, Karin Reich und Ivo Schneider.
