About The Book

Dem gro en Lehrmeister der Mechanik, Georg Hamei, war es vergönnt, vor seinem Tode auch noch den letzten, handgeschriebenen Teil seiner "Mechanik der Kon- tinua" durchzusehen. Der weitaus grö te Teil lag schon in Maschinenschrift vor, die dazugehörigen Abbildungen waren gezeichnet. Ich darf vorausschicken, da die Bitte und Anregung an Hamei, diesen, von allen seinen Schülern so sehr geschätzten und von ihm selbst wohl am meisten geliebten Teil seiner Vorlesungen in Buchform erscheinen zu lassen, von mir ausgegangen ist. Er griff diesen Gedanken freudig auf, und in Landshut, wo Hamel seine letzten Lebensjahre verbrachte, wurde von Herrn Studienrat Käufi aus Vorlesungsaufzeichnungen und nach Diktaten ein handgeschriebenes Manuskript fertiggestellt, von Hamel durch- gelesen und mir - wie er schrieb - "aktiv Lehrendem" übergeben, um "kritisch gelesen zu werden". Bei der Durchsicht und den anschlie enden Änderungen unterstützte mich Herr Dipl. -Math. Andre mit gro er Gewissenhaftigkeit und mit vorzüglichen und kritischen Sachkenntnissen; er hat auch sämtliche Ablei- tungen und Beispiele noch einmal durchgerechnet und schlie lich das maschinen- geschriebene Manuskript fertiggestellt. In persönlichen Unterhaltungen und in der Korrespondenz war es mit Hamel ver- einbart, da wir das maschinengeschriebene Exemplar des Werkes noch einmal einer "Generaldurchsicht" unterziehen sollten, um eventuelle Änderungen und insbesondere Kürzungen zu erwägen; wegen Hameis Tod wurde diese gemeinsam geplante Arbeit nicht mehr durchgeführt. Als ich auf Aufforderung des V erlages die Herausgabe übernahm, verbot nicht allein die Pietät, sondern auch die eigene Überzeugung es mir, grö ere Änderungen oder Kürzungen vorzunehmen.
