Das Problem der mechanischen Beanspruchung von Festkorpern wird aus wissenschaftlichem Interesse, aber auch auf Grund seiner eminent praktischen Bedeutung seit langem studiert. Die fruhen theoretischen Arbeiten der Kontinuumsmechanik legten zunachst idealisierend isotropes Verhalten des Werkstuckes zu- grunde, seit langerem werden aber auch anisotrope Medien in den Kreis der Betrachtungen gezogen. In den zwanziger Jahren unseres Jahrhunderts entstand eine zweite Arbeitsrichtung, die sich mit diesen Fragen, ausgehend von kristallphysikalischen Grundlagen, beschaftigt. Die Moglichkeit der Zuchtung groBer Kristalle und die durch Rontgenstrahlbeugung gegebene Struktur- und Texturforschung standen an der Wiege der neuen Richtung, in der die Anisotropie des elastischen und plastischen Verhal- tens im Mittelpunkt steht. Diese Arbeiten werden heute welt- weit in groBem Umfang betrieben, besonders auch unter Beruck- sichtigung der Bedeutung von Gitterfehlern. Auf den internationalen Kongressen der Gesellschaft fur an- gewandte Mathematik und Mechanik haben wahrend einer Reihe von Jahren Vertreter beider Arbeitsrichtungen uber ihre Ergebnisse berichtet. Leider flaute diese Zusammenarbeit immer mehr ab und etwa seit Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges haben sich beide Gruppen weitgehend isoliert. Die so wichtige Kenntnis der Er- gebnisse der sachlich verwandten Nachbargruppe ist leider auf beiden Seiten sehr zuruckgegangen.
