This volume discusses existing research and developing theory in the emerging field of Medical English as a Lingua Franca (MELF). As healthcare workers increasingly move across international borders, and as English serves as a default language of international communication in medicine, MELF interactions are a growing and increasingly global phenomena. This book asserts that MELF has the potential to considerably deepen our understanding of English as a Lingua Franca, in that it differs in several important ways from many domains of previous ELF research.
