Neste estudo, atualmente o maior da Europa, foi analisada a incid�ncia de casos em cinco cl�nicas veterin�rias representativas de diferentes partes da Alemanha. Durante um per�odo de seis a onze meses, estas cinco cl�nicas veterin�rias registaram a descri��o, o motivo da consulta, os sintomas cl�nicos, bem como o diagn�stico e a terapia de 5030 pacientes (principalmente c�es, gatos ou pequenos animais de estima��o). Mais de um ter�o das 6.100 consultas documentadas foram para cuidados de sa�de ou devido a problemas de pele. Juntamente com a categoria de problemas n�o espec�ficos, como febre, perda de apetite e emagrecimento, estes casos representam quase 50% do total. As diferen�as espec�ficas entre esp�cies animais s�o significativamente mais proeminentes na Alemanha do que as varia��es regionais ou sazonais. Foram realizados exames complementares em quase metade dos pacientes doentes, nos restantes pacientes foi poss�vel estabelecer um diagn�stico atrav�s da anamnese e do exame cl�nico ou n�o foi poss�vel determinar a causa da doen�a. Em 60% dos casos, foram utilizadas terapias medicamentosas. Em v�rias especialidades m�dicas, n�o foi poss�vel estabelecer um diagn�stico claro.
