Dieses Arbeitsbuch zur medizinischen Ethik ist entstanden auf dem Hintergrund der langjiihrigen Bemuhungen von Prof. Dr. med. E. Seidler, die Forschungen zur medizini- schen Ethik an seinem Institut fUr Geschichte der Medizin an der Universitiit Freiburg zu intensivieren und auch zu einem festen Bestandteil der Lehre werden zu lassen. 1979 bis 1983 hat die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft Sach- mittel zur DurchfUhrung eines Projekts bewilligt; dadurch wurde es moglich, verschiedene Bereiche der medizinischen Ethik intensiver zu erforschen und sie in den Arbeitskreisen innerhalb und auBerhalb der medizinischen Fakultiit zu dis- kutieren. Daraus entstand der Plan, den Lernenden der me- dizinischen Heilberufe eine Art Basiscurriculum fur die Ar- beit an medizinisch-ethischen Fragen wiihrend der Aus- bildung zur VerfUgung zu stellen. Erfahrungen mit Forschung und Vermittlung medizini- scher Ethik lagen bereits aus einigen europiiischen Liindern vor. Wegweisend waren v. a. die Publikationen und Aktivi- tiiten des bisher einzigen Lehrstuhlinhabers fUr medizinische Ethik, Prof. Dr. P. Sporken in Maastricht (Niederlande). Wichtig war auch die intensive Beschiiftigung mit diesem Gegenstand, die aus den bioethischen Zentren der USA, wie dem Hastings Center of Bioethics, Hastings-on-Hudson, und dem Kennedy Institute of Bioethics, Washington, D. c., bekannt geworden waren. Kontakte und Erfahrungsaus- tausch besonders mit dem Kennedy Institute festigten die Uberzeugung, daB auch bei uns die medizinische Ethik ein wichtiges Element in der Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung medizinischer und pflegerischer Berufe werden muB.
