Dieses Buch ist ein Versuch zur systematischen Darstellung von Pro- blemen und Methoden in einem Fach, das im wesentlichen noch dadurch definiert ist, daB es sich mit der Entwicklung und dem Einsat2 von EDV-unterstUtzten Losungen medizinischer Probleme beschaftigt. Der Medizinischen Informatik fehlt bisher eine Voraussetzung der klassi- schen Definition eines wissenschaftlichen Faches, namlich die Ab- grenzbarkeit einer eigenstandigen Methodik. Dies ist bedingt durch die Tatsache, daB sich medizinische Phanomene nicht erschopfend mit den Mitteln eines einzigen naturwissenschaftlichen Faches erklaren lassen. Es ist geradezu typisch fOr biologische Probleme, daB zu ihrer Losung verschiedene Facher beitragen und integriert werden mOssen. Diese Situation hat bei dem groBen und breit gefacherten Bedarf an UnterstOtzung bei der Losung medizinischer Probleme zu einem sehr inhomogenen Bild des Faches gefUhrt, das dem interessierten Anfanger einen Uberblick erschwert. Der dringende Bedarf an einer systematischen Darstellung ergibt sich vor allem aus zwei Aspekten: - Mit der zweiten Verordnung zur nderung der Approbationsord- nung fOr rzte ( AppO) vom 24.2.1978 wird eine Intensivierung der Ausbildung in "Biomathematik"/"Medizinische Statistik"/ "Dokumentation" gefordert, die mit der AppO vom 28.10.1970 in das Studium der Medizin eingefUhrt worden war. Die notwendige Integration der Medizinischen Informatik in die Medizin wird aber erst dann befriedigend gelingen, wenn ein systematischer Uberblick wahrend des Studiums den kUnftigen Arzt befahigt, die Moglichkeiten dieses Faches zu nutzen oder gar zu ihrer Weiterentwicklung beizutragen.
