Allan Middleton's long time dream of living in the country away from the everyday hustle and bustle of commuting back and forth between his job in the city and his suburban home amid the snarling freeway traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area finally comes true after he inherits a large home, located in a rural town in Maine, from his late Great-Uncle Bennie. Since the house in Maine was an heirloom, his wife Lynne makes a suggestion to Allan they sell their California home and move their young family clear across the country to Barrington's Place, Maine. Wanting to spend more time with Lynne and their two children Kevin and Megan, despite Lynne's earlier skepticism, Allan decides to turn their beautifully remodeled new home into a bed and breakfast inn naming it for their daughter. They later take on a young CPA and his new wife from California, who were guests at the inn, also seeking an escape from the Bay Area to work and live with them. Now that Allan could spend quality time with his family, his Uncle Bennie appears occasionally, only Allan could see, and the two talk to one another, spending a little time together and even spending a morning fishing in the nearby river. Lynne dismisses her husband's claim that he actually saw his late great-uncle until a tragic event takes place when Lynne begs and pleads for Bennie's help.
