The book is the second in a series, following on from wildlife conservation scientist Dr Colin Bonnington's first animal book 'The Grey Tale of Mrs Sciurus'. Meles, the brilliant badger from this story, features as the main character in this new tale called 'Meles and the Ferocious Farmer'.

Meles and his badger famly live on Cuckoo Nest Farm. But the greedy Farmer Buck wants to turn the farm into a new ultra-exclusive spa, which is most definately a badger-free zone.

But Farmer Buck has a history of treating animals badly and he is under surveillance from a Royal Society for the Protection of Animals Officer, called Jenni Wren and a Wildlife Protection Officer called PC Jack Daws, so he needs to play fair or he risks his dream of having a stupendous spa being left in tatters.

Farmer Buck challenges Meles to a contest to see who can dig the deepest. The prizes are simple. If the farmer wins, Meles and his family need to go, and go for good. The emphasis on good! If Meles wins, then the badgers can stay on the farm and have fields of wheat and oats just for them to fill their tummies from. Following this contest, another challenge is set. This time the odds are even greater than before with the winner having the choice of which house to stay in- Farmer Buck's grand farmhouse, or Mele's underground home, the Sett. Will Farmer Buck need to down-size and the badgers get to live in the fantastic farmhouse, or will Meles and his family be out on their ear?

This is a truly David and Goliath tale about a defenceless badger taking on a much more powerful and ferocious opponent, Farmer Buck. For those who love the fabulous Fantastic Mr Fox by the great Roald Dahl, you might just like this badger tale about the marvellous Meles.

Bonnington, Colin: - Colin works as an ecological consultant based in Manchester. He writes wildlife themed stories based on his experiences during his work. He completed a doctorate at the University of Sheffield on the impact of grey squirrels on birds, and still regularly writes scientific journal articles. 'Meles and the Ferocious Farmer' is his second book for children. Colin lives in Cheshire with his cat and his wife (and at the moment, her baby bump!).
