Porfirio DÃaz escribiÃ³ estas Memorias, contando su vida entera desde su nacimiento hasta julio de 1867. En ellas reserva el primer capÃtulo a sus antepasados. Se incluyen, ademÃ¡s, trece aÃ±os de sus aventuras militares, hasta el momento en que fue candidato a las elecciones presidenciales de su paÃs, por primera vez.

Porfirio DÃaz fue un lÃder mexicano que desarrollÃ³ una intensa actividad militar y polÃtica durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. ParticipÃ³ en dos conflictos bÃ©licos:

la guerra de Reforma (1858-1861);

y la guerra contra el Segundo Imperio Mexicano (1863-1867).

Se rebelÃ³ contra el gobierno federal en dos ocasiones: la primera contra el presidente Benito JuÃ¡rez, en 1871; y, posteriormente, contra SebastiÃ¡n Lerdo de Tejada, en 1876.

Porfirio DÃaz fue cuatro veces gobernador de Oaxaca y nueve veces presidente de MÃ©xico, entre 1876 y 1911. Su larga gestiÃ³n de gobierno ha sido motivo de controversia: unos historiadores resaltan el crecimiento econÃ³mico sin precedentes que registrÃ³ la economÃa mexicana bajo su mandato; otros ponen el foco en su autoritarismo, la manipulaciÃ³n electoral y la expropiaciÃ³n de los ejidos, que condenÃ³ a los indÃgenas a vivir en la pobreza y la indigencia. La figura de Porfirio es clave en la historia mexicana: polÃ©mica, aclamada y cuestionada por igual.

About The Author

Naci en la ciudad de Oaxaca el 15 de septiembre de 1830. Mi padre fue Jose Faustino Diaz y mi madre, su esposa, Petrona Mori. Aunque de origen espanol, mi padre era de los que llamamos raza criolla, es decir, con alguna mezcla de sangre india. Mis abuelos paternos fueron Manuel Diaz y Marcela Bohorquez, ambos de Oaxaca;y mis abuelos maternos Mariano Mori y Tecla Cortes, de Yodocono. Mi bisabuelo materno vino de Asturias y se caso con una india del pueblo de Yodocono, parroquia de Tilantongo, Distrito de Nochistlan, del Estado de Oaxaca;de manera que mi madre tenia media sangre india de raza mixteca. Despues de algun tiempo mis abuelos maternos se establecieron en la ciudad de Oaxaca en donde se caso mi madre. Mi padre era herrador y veterinario de profesion y antes de casarse, siendo muy joven, habia servido en un Regimiento como mariscal.
