Und wenn diese Frage mit einem Nein beantwortet wird, gilt dies noch immer, wenn durch diese Wahl ein menschliches Leben gerettet wird? Wie im Beispiel des Jungen Adam Nash, der unter fünfzehn Embryonen ausgesucht wurde, weil sein Nabelschnurblut in der Lage war, die Heilung seiner kranken Schwester Molly zu fördern. Kann der Tod von vierzehn ungeborenen Kindern gerechtfertigt sein, wenn dadurch ein Mensch überleben und ein anderer geboren werden kann? Oder ist allein eine utilitaristische Betrachtungsweise bei der Bewertung menschlichen Lebens ethisch fragwürdig, solange man dabei das Ableben von Embryonen und Föten in Kauf nehmen muss? Doch wie auch entschieden wird, der Wunsch, Krankheiten zu heilen und so die Qualität des menschlichen Lebens zu verbessern, bleibt bestehen. Spiegelt es doch deutlich das nachvollziehbare Bedürfnis nach Gesundheit wieder, welches nicht auf den einzelnen beschränkt bleibt. So mag es nicht verwunderlich erscheinen, dass die Idee aufkommt, der Mensch könnte mit Hilfe der Fortpflanzungsmedizin in Zukunft schon vor der Geburt Krankheitsverlauf und Gendefekte genauer kontrollieren, eindämmen oder sogar ausschalten. Gerade im zweiten Fallbeispiel wird der mögliche Unterschied der Interessen von Allgemeinheit und Einzelpersonen deutlich. Denn während Behinderungen von den meisten Menschen als nach Möglichkeit vermeidbar angesehen werden, hat sich das taube, gleichgeschlechtliche Paar Sharon Duchesneau und Candace McCullough bereits zum zweiten Mal durch einen passenden Samenspender den Wunsch nach ebenfalls tauben Kindern erfüllt.
