Dieses Lehrbuch behandelt die zentralen Inhalte der Meteorologie für Studenten der Geographie, Hydrologie, Ozeanographie, Meteorologie, Nautik und Klimatologie. In der zweiten Auflage wurde das Buch hinsichtlich der Klimatologie und Aerosolphysik erweitert. Eingang fanden auch die Lösungen der Übungsaufgaben sowie zahlreiche neue Abbildungen und Tabellen.

Meteorologie beschäftigt sich mit den atmosphärischen Zuständen und Prozessen in ihrer raumzeitlichen Verteilung, wobei die Raumskalen Grö enordnungen von wenigen Millimetern bis hin zu einigen tausend Kilometern aufweisen und die Zeitskalen im Bereich von Millisekunden bis zu einigen Millionen Jahren variieren, so dass eine gro e Mannigfaltigkeit von atmosphärischen Bewegungsformen und Strukturen existiert.

Das Werk beruht auf langjährigen Lehrerfahrungen an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und am Fachbereich Seefahrt der Jade-Hochschule. Es bietet Studenten und Lehrkräften einen praxisbezogenen und fundierten Einstieg in die Zustände und Prozesse der uns umgebenden Umwelt.

Brigitte Klose arbeitete nach ihrem Studium zunächst im Flugwetterdienst und als Fernsehmeteorologe, ehe sie an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin promovierte und habilitierte. Von 1989 bis 1996 war Sie Dozentin am Fachbereich Meteorologie und Geophysik der Humboldt-Universität und von 1997 bis zu ihrer Emeritierung Professorin für Navigation und Meteorologie am Fachbereich Seefahrt in Elsfleth (Jade-Hochschule). Neben zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen entstand 2008 Ihr Lehrbuch zur Meteorologie.

Brigitte Klose hat nach einem Praktikum am Aerologischen Observatorium Lindenberg an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Meteorologie studiert und dort auch promoviert (1976). Nach dem Studium war sie mehr als ein Jahrzehnt an der Flugwetterwarte in Berlin-Schönefeld tätig, erarbeitete eigenverantwortlich Fernseh-wetterberichte und präsentierte dieselben auch über viele Jahre.

Von 1978 an war sie an der Humboldt-Universität im Bereich Meteorologie und Geophysik als Assistentin und Dozentin wirksam, habilitierte 1988 und forschte zu Windphänomenen im Grenzschichtbereich sowie zur Synoptischen Meteorologie. Ihre umfangreichen Forschungsergebnisse legte sie in Tagungsberichten sowie in nationalen als auch in internationalen Fachzeitschriften nieder.

Nach Schließung des Meteorologischen Instituts der Humboldt-Universität 1996 wurde sie auf eine Professur für Meteorologie und Navigation an die Fachhochschule Oldenburg (Bereich Seefahrt in Elsfleth) berufen. Sie las bis zu ihrer Emeritierung die Meteorologie inklusive eines meteorologischen Praktikums, die klassische und astronomische Navigation und die Mathematik für Nautikstudenten. Im Rahmen ihrer Lehrtätigkeit betreute sie weit über Hundert Diplomarbeiten und Dissertationen.
