This book brings together insights from over a hundred experts in meteorology and climatology to expand existing knowledge of climate variability across various timescales and weather patterns in South America, Africa, Australasia and Antarctica. It describes the atmospheric circulation in the tropics and southern extratropics and puts into perspective its northern counterpart. The discovery of different types of El Nio-Southern Oscillation, Indian Ocean Dipole and trends in the Southern Annular Mode are a few examples of phenomena discussed. The book also examines the role of the oceans in the climate, highlights the impact of extreme events and observed changes, explores future projections in a warming world, and discusses the current state and challenges of climate modelling. This book will be a key resource for researchers and graduate students in meteorology, atmospheric science and climatology, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere.

Ambrizzi, Tercio: - Tercio Ambrizzi is Full Professor and the Director of the Institute of Energy and Environment at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. He is the coordinator of the Climate Crisis and Disasters Resilience Research Centre at USP. He is a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. He works in atmospheric sciences, with an emphasis on dynamic meteorology, numerical modelling, and climate change. He has published hundreds of articles in specialised journals and dozens of book chapters and has supervised PhD, Master's, and postdoctoral studies. For many years, he was a member of the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).

Ndarana, Thando: - Thando Ndarana is Associate Professor in meteorology in the Department of Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. His main research is on weather systems dynamics, extreme weather predictability, and the impact of stratospheric ozone depletion on surface climate. Thando is a member of the World Weather Research Programme's (WWRP) Working Group on Predictability, Dynamics and Ensemble Forecasting (PDEF), the International Commission on Dynamic Meteorology (ICDM), and the International Commission on the Middle Atmosphere (ICMA). Both ICDM and ICMA are commissions with the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences.

Taschetto, Andréa S.: - Andréa S. Taschetto is Associate Professor in the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, Australia. She is also a researcher at the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centres of Excellence for Climate Extremes and the Weather of the 21st Century, and the Climate Systems Hub of the National Environmental Science Program (NESP). Her research investigates the mechanisms by which the oceans affect global and regional climate, including the impacts associated with the different types of El Niño-Southern Oscillation on the atmospheric circulation and extremes such as droughts and floods. Andréa was awarded the Dorothy Hill Award from the Australian Academy of Science in 2016 for her contribution to the climate science field. She is currently a co-chair of the CLIVAR Pacific Regional Panel and a member of the Tropical Basin Interactions Research Foci. She is an editor for Journal of Southern Hemisphere Earth Systems Science.
