Das vorliegende Buch entstand auf die verdankenswerte Anregung meines verehrten Lehrers, Herm Prof. Dr. E. S tie f e 1. Es richtet sich an Mathematiker, Physiker, Ingenieure und allgemeine Naturwissenschaftler, welche an einer elementaren und auf die praktische und effiziente Durchfiihrung ausgerichteten einfiihrenden Darstellung der Methode der finiten Elemente interessiert sind. In dem mit voller Absicht elementar gehaltenen einflihrenden Lehrbuch sind die Grund- prinzipien der Methode der finiten Elemente fUr ein-und zweidimensionale Probleme eingehend dargelegt. Die Obertragung der Ideen auf die Losung von dreidimensionalen Aufgaben liegt auf der Hand. Die Beschrankung auf die Behandlung von ein-und zwei- dimensionalen Problemstellungen hat den Vorteil der Anschaulichkeit und der Durch- sichtigkeit. Es wurde versucht, einen dem Umfang des Buches angemessenen Querschnitt von reprasentativen Anwendungen zur Darstellung zu bringen und die zugehorigen' Grundlagen zu vermitteln. Da der Anwendungsbereich der Methode der finiten Elemente sehr weit und vielseitig ist, wurde der Zielsetzung des Buches entsprechend eine Aus- wahl von typischen Problemkreisen getroffen. So werden zunachst die fiir die Physik und verschiedene Zweige der Naturwissenschaften wichtigen stationaren und instatio- paren Feldprobleme behandelt. Darunter fallen im wesentlichen elliptische Randwert- aufgaben, instationare Warmeleitungsprobleme und Schwingungsaufgaben. Aus dem weiten Gebiet der Elastomechanik werden einschrankend nur Stabe, Balken, Scheiben und Platten betrachtet, an denen das grundsatzliche Vorgehen aufgezeigt wird. Das Buch gliedert sich in sechs Kapitel. Zuerst werden eine Reihe von typischen und anwendungsorientierten Problemstellungen formuliert und anschlieBend die zu ihrer Losung notwendigen mathematischen und physikalischen Grundlagen zusammenge- stellt.
