Alles rein historische ist, soweit es anging, in die Anmerkungen am Schlüsse des Bändchens verarbeitet, die somit in höherem Grade als bei den früher erschienenen Bänden dieser Serie, eine wesentliche Ergänzung der Vorbemerkungen bilden. Es war in der Tat eine Wiedergeburt zu neuem Leben, die die Menschheit in den Jahrhunderten der Renaissance erfuhr: ein Schauspiel zugleich von wahrhaft dramatischem Verlauf. Mit dem Beginne des 14. Jahrhunderts â " mit Dante, Giotto und Giovanni Pisano â " hebt es an, in raschen und glänzenden, die Erwartung aufs höchste spannenden Eingangsszenen findet es seine Exposition; einen Augenblick scheint es dann zu stocken, aber nur, um mit dem beginnenden 15. Jahrhundert neu aufgenommen und nun in aller Breite ausgesponnen zu werden, bis es im Beginne des 16. Jahrhunderts die Höhe erreicht und nun rasch ein beinahe katastrophales Ende findet. Michelangelos Leben umspannt, von 1475 bis zum Jahre 1564 den letzten Abschnitt dieser gro en Epoche, die gleichzeitig allen künstlerischen und religiösen, allen wissenschaftlichen und politischen Lebensenergien den weitesten Spielraum zur Entfaltung gegeben hat.\" [...] Der deutsche Kunsthistoriker Max Sauerlandt gibt mit dem vorliegenden Band einen umfassenden und detailreichen Überblick in das Leben und Schaffen von Michelangelo.
