At the turn of the twentieth century, Milovan Milovanovi? (1863-1912) had become one of Europe's leading experts on international law. Throughout his career, Milovanovi? was known as an extremely able diplomat who avoided military options to resolving conflict. He also gained fame for his exemplary work during Austria-Hungary's abrupt annexation in 1908 of the largely Serbian provinces of Bosnia and Herzegovina and his subsequent patience in organizing a coalition of Balkan states against the Ottoman Empire. David Mackenzie follows Milovanovi?'s fascinating life and unmatched political savvy, recounting how the diplomat's brilliance and skill overcame a number of obstacles. His story not only provides a unique window into the practice of diplomacy, but it also adds a deeper dimension to the history of Serbia prior to the Balkan wars of 1912 and 1913.

About the Author

David MacKenzie is professor emeritus of the University of North Carolina. His works include The Lion of Teshkent: The Career of General M. G. Cherniaev, Ilija Garasanin: Balkan Bismark, Apis: The Congenial Conspirator, and Violent Solutions: Revolutions, Nationalism, and Secret Societies in Europe to 1918.
