Die Entwicklung fortgeschrittener Industriegesellschaften mit ihren vielf�ltigen M�g- lichkeiten, Chancen und vor allem Risiken legen nahe, sie als eine Gesellschaftsform zu charakterisieren, die sich von der Modeme mit ihren Grundprinzipien der Klarheit, Eindeutigkeit und Rationalit�t abgrenzt. Diese Ver�nderungen werden mit dem Stich- wort einer "reflexiven Modeme" beschrieben, mehr aber noch und deutlicher in der Absetzung davon mit dem Etikett der Postmoderne. Hier dr�ngen sich andere Grund- prinzipien vor. Emotionalit�t gewinnt gegen�ber Rationalit�t an Bedeutung, Kultur tritt als Steuerungselement neben strukturellen Zw�ngen hervor. Dies ist in den Sozial- wissenschaften wohl eine der bedeutendsten Weiterentwicklungen der letzten Jahre: das Sprechen von Kulturalisierung. Dabei wird der alte Kulturbegriff, der statisch Kultur als ein Set von Sitten und Br�uchen sah, als ein Konglomerat von lexikalisch festschreibbaren Werten und Normen, das wom�glich elit�r abgegrenzt mit Hochkultur synonym gesetzt wurde, von einem dynamischen und proze orientierten Kulturbegriff abgel�st, der an die amerikanische Tradition des Pragmatismus und insbesondere an seine soziologische Auspr�gung im Symbolischen Interaktionismus ankn�pft. Kultur wird in diesem Sinne als die Summe an Bedeutungen verstanden die Personen ihrem Handeln zugrunde legen und die durch Symbole vermittelt werden. Dabei wird zwar auf ein Set von Bedeutungen zur�ckgegriffen, dieses wird aber in der Interaktion ver- festigt und auch neu gestaltet. Kulturen sind demnach Konglomerate �hnlicher Bedeutungen, �hnlicher Wahrnehmensweisen von Gesellschaft. In diesem Sinne erscheinen postmoderne Gesellschaften multikulturell, was sich in einer Vielfalt von Lebensstilen ausdr�ckt. Ethnische odernationale Zugeh�rigkeiten sind nur ein weiteres Element dieser vielf�ltigen Kulturen.
