Zahnlose Patienten mit schmalem Kieferkamm, aufgrund des Alters oft mit erhöhtem allgemeinmedizinischen Risiko, wünschen sich eine Verbesserung des Halts ihrer Totalprothese im Unterkiefer. Aufgrund der geringen Retentionsmöglichkeiten im zahnlosen insbesondere atrophieren Unterkiefer stellt eine rein schleimhautgetragene Prothese keinen adäquaten Ersatz der verlorenen Zähne dar. Miniimplantate bieten hier eine Alternative zu Standardimplantaten, um diesen Verlust an Lebensqualität wiederherzustellen. Miniimplantate weisen einen Durchmesser von 1,8 mm bis 2,9 mm auf, sind zumeist einteilig, und werden dadurch sofort belastet (Huemer 2013). Durch ihre geringere Dimension ermöglichen sie auch die Implantation im atrophierten Kiefer meist ohne aufwendige Knochenaugmentation (Esposito 2009). Da meistens ein minimal invasiver Eingriff ohne Lappenpräparation möglich ist, und die Einteiligkeit kein weiteres chirurgisches Freilegen erfordert, ist die Behandlung für den Patienten schonender (Mundt 2014). Dadurch wird auch eine Behandlung von ängstlichen Patienten oder Patienten mit reduziertem Allgemeinzustand ermöglicht. Die fehlende Augmentation und die Einfachheit der Behandlung verringern die Kosten und verkürzen die Behandlungsdauer (Elsyad 2013, Jofre 2010). Deshalb sollen in dieser Studie der Einfluss der Implantatlänge, die Anzahl der gesetzten Implantate, die Position der gesetzten Implantate anterior oder posterior, das angewendete chirurgische Verfahren, der Zeitpunkt der Belastung und der Einfluss des Durchmessers auf die Survivalrate untersucht werden.
