First released in 1885 by Charles Howard Shinn under the title "Mining Camps: A Study in American Frontier Government", this publication offers a unique look at how early gold miners established their own forms of representative government during the California Gold Rush. Drawing on the the early mining codes of mideviel German miners in the Harz Mountains, on the mining customs of the Cornish tin miners and early Spanish mining laws introduced into California, the miners established the first governments in the American West.
