As half of Margaret Frazer, she was involved with Gail Frazer in writing the first five Sister Frevisse Medieval Mysteries, . The second book, The Servant's Tale, was nominated for an Edgar award. From the seventh book on, these were written solely by Gail Frazer. Today's readers are most likely to know her as Monica Ferris, who has written nineteen Betsy Devonshire Needlework Mysteries. The first book, "Crewel World", has gone through at least eighteen printings Margaret of Shaftesbury is a very early pen name, under which Mary wrote a series of chapbooks on life in a medieval abbey of nuns, collected together as The Chronicles of Deer Abbey.
