These turtles are a subspecies of the Map Turtle, named from the elaborate map-like markings on their shells. Mississippi Map Turtles are known for their remarkable appearance and tiny size when compared to other freshwater turtles.

Map turtles, especially the Mississippi Map Turtle, are mostly aquatic species that live in slow-moving rivers, lakes, and reservoirs with muddy or sandy bottoms. They are often seen basking on logs, rocks, and riverbanks to absorb heat from the sun. They are adept swimmers with long, keen claws, and their bodies are perfectly suited to living in the water.
