La mastite bovina � la patologia pi� complessa, principalmente a causa dei molteplici agenti causali, della scarsa comprensione della risposta immunitaria precoce e delle complessit� associate al danno alle cellule epiteliali mammarie causato sia dagli agenti che dai fattori dell'ospite. La diminuzione della produzione di latte rappresenta circa il 70% del costo totale della mastite. Inoltre, la scarsa comprensione del fenomeno sottostante nello stato subclinico dell'infezione complica gli interventi terapeutici. Il termine "programma di biosicurezza contro la mastite" si riferisce alla protezione del bestiame dai patogeni contagiosi della mastite. La mastite pu� essere controllata a un livello inferiore adottando un programma adeguato di gestione della salute della mammella, che a sua volta si basa su due principi principali, ovvero l'eliminazione dell'infezione esistente e la prevenzione di nuove infezioni.
