I suoi indirizzi di ricerca sono: meccanica dei fluidi, onde d'acqua, turbolenza della superficie libera, dinamica granulare, flussi detritici, e flussi non newtoniani in mezzi porosi.

Marco Petti è professore ordinario di Idraulica presso il Dipartimento Politecnico di Ingegneria e Architettura dell'Università di Udine. Ha sviluppato la propria attività scientifica nell'ambito delle discipline dell'idraulica, con particolare riguardo all'idraulica marittima e all'idraulica fluviale.
