Im Gegensatz zum traditionellen Fachunterricht orientieren sich die Themen, wie beispielsweise im Kernlehrplan des Faches Deutsch gefordert, stärker an den Interessen und Problemen der Lebenswelt der Schüler. Wesentliche Merkmale des fächerverbindenden Unterrichts sind ganzheitliches Lernen, Handlungs- und Projektorientierung sowie die Förderung von Selbsttätigkeit und Selbstständigkeit der Schüler, wodurch ihre Motivation gesteigert wird. Das 1963 veröffentlichte Drama Die Physiker von Friedrich Dürrenmatt thematisiert die Frage nach der Verantwortlichkeit der Wissenschaftler für ihre Forschungsergebnisse. Es eignet sich aus diesem Grund gut für die Besprechung in der Schule und als Grundlage für die Behandlung dieses zentralen Diskussionspunktes der Wissenschaft. Thema der vorliegenden Arbeit sind die Möglichkeiten des fachübergreifenden bzw. fächerverbindenden Unterrichts am Beispiel von Friedrich Dürrenmatts Drama "Die Physiker" mit dem Ziel, eine Unterrichtsreihe zu dem Drama zu konzipieren. Die Aktualität der in diesem Stück dargestellten Problematik lässt sich den Schülern durch die Behandlung einer in den letzten Jahren wiederholt aufkommenden Diskussion zum Thema Nutzung embryonaler Stammzellen in der Genforschung verdeutlichen. Durch den methodischen Schwerpunkt, die Kooperation mit dem Fach Biologie, erfahren die Lernenden, dass die von Dürrenmatt beschriebene Problematik auch sie in ihrem Alltag betrifft, wenn sie als Bürger mitentscheiden wollen.
