Cancer is a disease which is characterized by uncontrolled growth of cells. It occurs due to damage to the genome, which leads to sequential acquisition of mutations, which in turn gives rise to malignancy in cancer. The sources of mutations within this disease are studied in order to devise effective prevention and treatment strategies. There are also different viruses which can induce the development of cancer. These are known as oncogenic viruses. Another major cause of cancer is fibrosis. It is the final stage of several chronic inflammatory diseases. During organ fibrogenesis, disruption of organ parenchymal cells and the normal organ structural scaffold leads to absence of cell polarity, which can promote uncontrolled cell proliferation finally leading to cancer initiation and progression.
