Abril de 1960. Orillas del Lago Ness. El ingeniero aeronáutico Tim Dinsdale, investigador del Loch Ness Investigation Bureau (LNIB), oficina encargada de realizar estudios científicos sobre los misteriosos animales acuáticos del lago, filma una corta película que hasta el momento no ha podido ser explicada del todo. Los últimos análisis de la polémica cinta revelan la existencia de grandes organismos subacuáticos en el lago, de varios metros de longitud, que al parecer, por lo mostrado en el celuloide, son capaces de mantener altas velocidades en la superficie del agua, y bajo ella. Ocho años más tarde el profesor D. Gordon Tucker, experto en sónar y presidente y coordinador del Departamento de Electrónica e Ingeniería Eléctrica de la Universidad de Birmingham, Reino Unido, declara en una rueda de prensa: Los animales detectados por nuestro sónar en 1968 navegaban por debajo del agua a 19 Km/h. Estos objetos animados y móviles, de unos 6 m. de longitud, no podían ser peces. Las rápidas zambullidas y los vertiginosos ascensos subacuáticos realizados por las veloces criaturas anulan esa posibilidad. Ningún ictiólogo o experto en pesquerías ha podido sugerir una especie capaz de tales proezas. Nos sentimos tentados a pensar que son los fabulosos monstruos del lago Ness, observados por vez primera durante sus actividades subacuáticas!. Los informes sobre enormes bestias acuáticas aún por identificar en cientos de lagos del planeta son uno de los enigmas zoológicos más fascinantes en la actualidad. Qué animales se esconden tras los miles de avistamientos? Quiénes han tratado de encontrar a estas esquivas criaturas? Existe realmente el monstruo del Lago Ness? Es posible que un reptil de colosales proporciones sobreviva en aguas prácticamente heladas? Dónde podemos tratar de observarlos?

Gustavo Sánchez Romero es biólogo, residente en Tenerife, Canarias. A parte de cursar Ciencias Biológicas y, en particular, Zoología (su especialización), ha cursado estudios superiores en Paleontología y Geología. Los misterios animales y la fauna legendaria o desconocida son sus grandes pasiones, así como la historia natural, la vida prehistórica o los peces oceánicos y los sistemas fluviales amazónicos. Es articulista y colabora mensualmente con varias revistas de divulgación, en las que escribe sobre vida salvaje, pasada o aún por documentar. Además de contar con dos libros en su haber, que versan sobre estas materias, está preparando en estos momentos otro tomo sobre criptozoología de eminente aparición, que será publicado también por esta editorial y que pretende expandir una colección relacionada con esta temática. Asimismo, es un activo colaborador del programa radiofónico Crónicas de San Borondón (Canarias Radio Autonómica) y del programa televisivo Canarias Mágica (El Día TV), así como miembro del Centro de Zoología Forteana (CFZ, Reino Unido) y del Global Underwater Search Team (GUST, Suecia). Sus estudios de campo le han llevado a recorrer parte de las regiones neotropicales, donde planea continuar sus proyectos. Allí, a parte de datos científicos, ha recabado importante información criptozoológica que se presenta, por vez primera, en este volumen y sus subsiguientes libros.
