In "Morning and Begin Again," the poems are grouped according to life's great themes: childhood, love, transience, depression, nature, places lived in and visited, and remembrances of loved ones lost. The overall theme is death and rebirth, in both inner and outer life. The poems are not designed to be obscure or abstract conceptual puzzles, but rather are grounded in remembered and imagined events, and tell stories about living: its depths and shallows, whelms and hollows. The goal is, through image and sound, to involve and move readers, to power and intensify their lives by enabling them to share in the poet's most potent and fascinating experiences.

I have written poetry for most of my adult life, contributing to journals, newsletters, and professional publications. My first published book of poems, "A Family Album" (2006), recounts the joys and heartaches of growing up in a Jewish immigrant family with a schizophrenic younger sister. While writing this book, I became aware of the importance of baseball in my life, as a refuge from hard times and as a feature of good ones. The result is "The Pitch is on the Way: Poems About Baseball and Life" (2008), a tribute to the American Pastime. A third book, "Animal Songs" (2010), grew out of my love for and observations of animals, both pets and wild. "Morning and Begin Again," a collection of poems about the growth of awareness and renewal, is my fourth and most recent volume. In addition to poetry, I have authored a fantasy novel, "The Golden Spider," intended primarily for middle-grade children (approximately ages 9-12), but also a good read for older kids and adults who like the genre. I grew up in upstate New York (Rochester and Buffalo) and was an undergrad at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. I went to grad school at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where I did a PhD in English with a focus on modern poetry. After several years of teaching English, notably at Kent State and Akron Universities, I moved to the West Coast. After settling in San Francisco, I found work as a technical writer, and eventually made my living as a medical writer and consultant. In essence, writing stands at the heart of my life, both as a craft and livelihood and as an art and entertainment for myself and others.
