"Mughal Rule in India attempts to offer a comprehensive record of the main facts and subsidiary details of Mughal sovereignty, found both in original sources and the numerous yet occasionally costly works of modern writers. Regarding the period's political and administrative features, the account is primarily based upon well-known original sources the Memoirs of Babur, the Memoirs of Jahangir, the immortal work of Abul Fazl and so forth. Incidentally, it shows that religious intolerance, commonly believed to have been spurred by bigotry only during Aurangzeb's reign, was not wholly unknown during the reigns of Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The later chapters make use of the records of early European merchants and travellers to gauge the general circumstances of the Mughal empire.

This book will be a valuable resource for students and scholars pursuing medieval history. It will also be of great interest to general readers interested in the grand history of the Mughal empire."

S. M. Edwardes, widely recognised as a foremost authority on history, qualified for the Indian Civil Service in 1894 and was posted to the Bombay Presidency. His notable works include Rise of Bombay and Byways of Bombay.

H. L. O. Garrett, a British historian of India, graduated from Cambridge in 1902. He joined the Colonial Educational Service and taught at Queen's College, Hong Kong from 1904 to 1912. Later, he became a Professor of History and, following military duty, the Vice-Principal of the Government College in Lahore from 1919. He was a Commanding Officer of the University Training Corps and a keeper of government records. His published works include A First History of India (1936) and The Trial of Muhammad Bahadur Shah (1933).
