Möglichst viele Aufgaben sollen mit minimalem Zeitaufwand, gleichzeitig jedoch mit exzellenter Qualität erledigt werden. Die Digitalisierung der Lebens- und somit auch der Arbeitswelt steuert mit Computer, Internet, Fax, E-Mails, Telefon eine unüberschaubare Fülle an Informationen dazu, die auf den Arbeitenden einwirken und ihn dazu zwingen, permanent erreichbar zu sein. So kommt es immer öfter vor, dass die Arbeit neben der Bitte eines Kollegen oder neuen Aufgabe des Chefs auch noch durch technische Neuerungen unterbrochen wird, was das Meistern der ohnehin anspruchsvollen Aufgaben noch zusätzlich erschwert. So zeigte das Ergebnis einer Forsa-Umfrage der Techniker Krankenkasse von 2016 zur Ermittlung von Stressfaktoren von Berufstätigen, dass 64 Prozent der Befragten generell mit der Menge an Arbeit überfordert waren. Zusätzlich litten 52 Prozent unter Unterbrechungen und Störungen am Arbeitsplatz. Eine weitere Umfrage des SOEP ergab, dass etwa 30 Prozent der Befragten einer starken und circa 7 Prozent einer sehr starken Belastung durch Unterbrechungen und Störungen ausgesetzt seien. Die ständigen Unterbrechungen resultieren in der Notwendigkeit, regelmä ig zwischen zu bearbeitenden Aufgaben hin- und herwechseln zu müssen, bis hin zu dem Punkt an dem versucht wird, Aufgaben gleichzeitig erledigen zu wollen. Doch wie wirken sich die wechselhafte, oder sogar gleichzeitige Bearbeitung mehrerer Aufgaben auf die Leistung aus, die den Arbeitenden ohnehin schon abverlangt wird? Ist Multitasking, eine Fähigkeit die Bewerber heutzutage oft vorweisen sollen, wirklich effizient? Ist es überhaupt möglich, Aufgaben gleichzeitig zu bearbeiten?
