Der vorliegende Band behandelt eine Reihe ausgewahlter und in der Forschungspraxis haufig eingesetzter Analysemethoden der mUltivariaten Statistik. Mit Hilfe multivariater Statistik ist es moglich, komplexere Datensatze zu verarbeiten und zu int- namlich die Reduktion pretieren. Die Funktion von Statistik, von Information, wird besonders bei multivariaten Verfahren deutlich. Fur empirisch orientierte Natur- und Verhaltenswissenschaftler ist es notwendig, sich bereits vor empirisch-statistischen Untersuchungen (auch Diplomarbeiten, Dissertation u. a.) einen gewissen Grundstock von den Analysemethoden anzueignen oder sich daruber zumindest einen allgemeinen Uberblick zu v- schaffen. Deshalb wurde versucht, die einzelnen Verfahren in verstandlichen und interessanten Beispielen aus verschiedenen Wissenschaften darzustellen (Biologie, Geologie, Ingenieur- wissenschaften, Medizin, Psychologie und Soziologie). Fur eine Vielzahl kleinerer Studien und Pilotprojekte mit multivariater Fragestellung ist der Einsatz eines programmier- baren Taschenrechners zwar grundsatzlich moglich, aber wegen der haufig notwendigen Wiedereingabe von Zwischenergebnissen zu zeitaufwendig und fehleranfallig. Der Einsatz von sog. Heim- und Mikrocomputern, wie sie inzwischen preiswert ange- boten werden, reicht fur solche Anforderungen bereits vollauf. Da jedes Kapitel mit Datenverarbeitungsprogrammen ausgestattet ist, konnten auch Verfahren behandelt werden, die nicht in den gebrauchlichen Statistik-Programm-Paketen (z.B. BMDP, SAS, SPSS) enthalten sind. Das gilt besonders fur die Konfigu- tionsfrequenzanalysen (KFA), die Clusteranalyse nach Ward und die konfirmatorische Faktorenanalyse.
