About The Book

In My Musical Life, H. R. Haweis presents a personal and philosophical exploration of music's role in his life and society. Blending autobiography with music criticism, the book reflects on his experiences as a performer, preacher, and writer in Victorian England. Haweis delves into the spiritual, emotional, and ethical dimensions of music, advocating for its power to uplift and educate. He critiques composers, performers, and trends of his era with both insight and humor. The book stands out for its literary style, depth of feeling, and cultural commentary, offering readers a unique perspective on 19th-century music and its broader significance.

About The Author

Hugh Reginald Haweis (1838–1901) was an English clergyman, author, and music critic known for his writings that combined religious insight with a passion for music and culture. Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he later served as a curate and became incumbent of St James's, Marylebone. A traveler and social observer, he fought under Garibaldi in Italy and integrated his broad experiences into his writings. His most notable work, My Musical Life, reflects his deep appreciation for music’s moral and emotional influence. Haweis was married to author Mary Eliza Haweis and was the father of painter Stephen Haweis. His legacy blends faith, art, and intellect.
