Die bekanntesten Mysterien waren die der Demeter, der Kybele, die Dionysosmysterien sowie der Isis- und der Mithraskult. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Beschäftigung mit dieser Zeit des religiösen Übergangs: Unter anderem werden die Einflüsse verschiedener Faktoren (u.a. die materielle Situation der damaligen Zeit, die kutlurellen Einflüsse der damaligen "Globalisierung der Antike" und die Veränderung des Weltbildes durch die Philosophie) auf die gro e Beliebtheit der Mysterienkulte untersucht. Zudem wird auf die Beziehung zwischen den Mysterienkulten und dem Christentum eingegangen und erörtert, weshalb das Christentum schlie lich die griechisch-römische Religion und die Mysterienkulte verdrängen konnte. Die Untersuchung kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass die Mysterien gewisserma en einen Kompromiss zwischen den Vielen aufgrund der genannten Einflussfaktoren zu naiv erscheinenden alten Kulten und der den Meisten wohl zu abstrakten, nüchternen Philosophie darstellten, indem sie sowohl philosophische Elemente verarbeiteten als auch durch beeindruckende Riten für intensive emotionale Erlebnisse sorgten. Die Philosophie vermochte es nicht, existentiellen Ängsten (z.B. vor dem Tod) oder Bedürfnissen (Sehnsucht nach dem Irrationalen, nach sinnlichen Erlebnissen) zu begegnen. Irrationale Gefühlsreligiosität löste das quasi zweckrationale "do ut des" ab. Letztlich bewegte sich die geistesgeschichtliche Entwicklung auf das Christentum zu, das die monotheistischen Tendenzen der Spätantike und die Sehnsucht nach Erlösung befriedigen konnte.
