Momentan existieren zwei Sichtweisen über die Zukunft unserer Erde: Die pessimistische Sichtweise nach Meadows portraitiert ein düsteres Bild unserer Zukunft. Im Unterschied dazu sieht Simon in seiner optimistischen Sichtweise keinen Grund, warum sich unsere Erde nicht auch in Zukunft zu mehr Wohlstand entwickeln sollte, solange es den Menschen mit seinem gro en Einfallsreichtum gibt. Aus beiden Ansätzen kann die Forderung nach einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung abgeleitet werden. Aus theoretischer Sicht befasst sich die Nachhaltigkeit mit der gerechten Allokation der Ressourcen. Darüber hinaus existieren grundlegende Nachhaltigkeitsprinzipien, die allen Konzepten gemein sind. Wesentlich ist die Aufgliederung der Nachhaltigkeit in eine ökologische, soziale und ökonomische Dimension, wodurch alle relevanten Aspekte gleichmä ig berücksichtigt werden sollen. Bereits früh wurde erkannt, dass es zur Erreichung des ehrgeizigen Nachhaltigkeitsziels der Mithilfe aller Akteure aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft bedarf. Besondere Bedeutung kommt der Realisierung von Nachhaltigkeit auf lokaler Ebene zu. Mit Hilfe einer Lokalen Agenda 21 soll es den Gemeinden im Dialog mit Wirtschaft, Politik und Bürgern gelingen, in vier Phasen ein kommunales Nachhaltigkeitsleitbild zu erstellen und dieses auch umzusetzen.
