Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht im Bereich der germanisch-romanischen Sprachgrenze die sogenannten Namenpaare von Belgien, Nordfrankreich, Elsa -Lothringen, Luxemburg und der Westschweiz, d.h. die Namen eines Ortes in zwei (oder mehr) verschiedenen Sprachen. Damit versucht sie, eine Lücke in der toponomastischen Forschung zu schlie en, da bisher nahezu ausschlie lich kleinräumig-partikuläre Untersuchungen zu Namenpaaren vorgelegt wurden. Im Zentrum der Arbeit steht der umfangreiche Katalog der Namenpaare, der aus methodischen Gründen auf die Namen Belgiens und der Westschweiz - mit Erstbeleg vor dem Jahr 1200 - beschränkt werden mu te. Im Gegensatz zu manch älterer Untersuchung werden die urkundlichen Belege der behandelten Namenpaare quellenkritisch untersucht und nach Original und Kopie geschieden. Jeder Namenartikel schlie t darüber hinaus die kritische Überprüfung bisheriger Deutungen und Einordnung des Namenpaars in die erarbeitete Namenpaar-Typologie ein. Der Auswertungsteil wird von der typologischen, siedlungsgeschichtlichen und lautchronologischen Perspektive bestimmt. Die Untersuchung der Namenpaare zwischen Alpen und Ärmelkanal trägt somit zur Datierung von Sprachwandel (vor allem zur Lautchronologie) in zwei Sprachen, zur Sprachgrenzforschung und Siedlungsgeschichte im deutsch-französischen Grenzraum bei. Die Arbeit wurde 1994 mit dem Dr.-Eduard-Martin-Preis der Freunde der Universität des Saarlandes ausgezeichnet.
