Making a strong case for revising the formal diagnostic criteria of narcissistic personality disorder, this work argues for an approach that includes not just grandiose but also vulnerable manifestations of narcissistic pathology. It documents how inconsistent applications of the concept of narcissism have caused confusion in the field, creating a need for new definitions and deeper understanding. In doing so, this book offers specific suggestions for how best to treat people with narcissistic personality pathology in modern relational psychotherapy, whilst also discussing the notion of healthy forms of narcissism.

Carsten René Jørgensen is PhD and professor of clinical psychology at Aarhus University, Department of Psychology, trained in group analytic psychotherapy and (since 2001) attached to the Clinic for Personality Disorders, Aarhus University Hospital, Skejby. He has worked with intensive psychodynamic psychotherapy for more than thirty years - both as a therapist and a scientist - and is one of Scandinavia's leading researchers in the field of identity, identity disturbances, and borderline and narcissistic personality disorders.
