About The Author

William Roy Smith (1876–1938) was an American historian and professor at Bryn Mawr College, known for his work on Southern U.S. history. A student of William A. Dunning at Columbia University, Smith earned his Ph.D. in 1902. His notable works include South Carolina as a Royal Province and the controversial essay Negro Suffrage in the South, which justified Black disenfranchisement post-Reconstruction. This stance drew criticism from figures like W.E.B. Du Bois. Despite his scholarly achievements, his racial views remain deeply contested in historical discourse.
