Dabei soll das Psychologische im Nationalismus mit den relevanten politischen und geschichtlichen Tatsachen verknüpft werden. Das Gebiet des ehemaligen Jugoslawiens war/ist ein Feld, wo noch immer nationalistische und nationalismusähnliche Prozesse ablaufen und dafür werden die einzelnen Nationalismen analysiert und kommentiert werden zum Zweck der Erklärung des Nationalismus. Der Nationalismus ist ein Phänomen wie theoretisch als auch empirisch. Seine negative Konnotation in der internationalen Politik kann nicht in der Wissenschaft so offen wie in den Medien vorkommen. Allgemein betrachtet kann der Nationalismus nur bei der Entstehung neuer Nationen bzw. Staaten gerechtfertigt werden. Am jugoslawischen Beispiel erkennt man doch die Vielfältigkeit des Nationalismus. Die Falsifizierung der Multikausalität der jugoslawischen Krise beinhaltet auch die psychologische Ebene in sich. Am Besten werden solche Ergebnisse hervorgekriegt wenn man eine ideologische Konstellationsanalyse der jugoslawischen Nationalismen durchführt. Genau deswegen, wird eine laufende, nicht dem bestimmten Forschungsbereich begrenzte Analyse gemacht, deren Ergebnisse die Einzigartigkeit des jugoslawischen Falles stützen können. Von einer universaler Definition des Nationalismus kann man nicht reden. Am einfachsten und am gröbsten gesagt ist es "eine politische Ideologie, die auf Kongruenz zwischen einer Nation und einem Staatsgebilde abzielt". In dem Zusammenhang, liegt der Nationalismus in einem Spaltungsfeld zwischen Chauvinismus und Patriotismus was die Wahrnehmung betrifft.
